Around Belgian Culture

A lot of artistic movement grew in Belgium throughout history like the Renaissance, baroque painting,… There are also a lot of world known artists who came from Belgium: Adolphe Sax, the inventor of saxophone; Victor Horta, a renowned architect; Hergé, the writer and cartoonist of the adventures of Tintin;…

Music

Music is one of the arts that represents the most different styles. We may think that most of the styles are known to the general public. But some styles, although known, tend to remain marginal (like metal for example). Some scenes are then created for these underground groups. Adherents to this music’s style sometimes offer evening events that allow non-initiates to discover this style.

In Louvain-la-Neuve, for example, there was a group that made “metal evenings” in a bar in town. Of course it was a time of encounter for insiders, but it also allowed uninitiated acquaintances to participate in the evening. So these are pure moments of sharing and discovery.

Painting / Street art

In the field of painting, Street art is the most underground style. This culture is growing more and more.

There are, in different cities, some associations, mostly youth center, which offer programs in the summer to youth were they stroll around the city to make tags and frescoes that embellish this one. It is the cities counsil who call upon those associations for these artworks.

Theatre

Theatre is known to be something quite « old », which attracts a less young audience etc. But when you dig a little, you realize that this isn’t the case. For example, there are many improvisation teams in Belgium that organize contests between them. It is so widespread that you can find these crews in almost every Belgian city. There are also more and more small theater troupes playing shows that they created. These occur in halls with small scenes like in the back of cafes or in schools. These troupes then perform several week-end performances. But in addition, they offer associations, schools… to reap the benefits of one of the representations. The members of the association who sell the seats for their profits and this brings greater visibility to the troupes
