In December 2017, Times published an article about the 10 most popular songs of this year in America. I can understand that a lot of people like those songs. Tastes and colours are different to each other. But why classify them ? There are many reasons why, doing a top Chart’s songs is a bad idea.
First of all, this type of classification reflect an economic reality. Dua Lipa and Luis Fonsi are on the Top 3 , but they received a large campaign of communication. Radio, Tv… They had a large visibility. So the most popular music doesn’t reflect totally what peoples really like and can discover by themself without any influences. Also the article is based on Spotify statistics. We can think that people can choose by themself which music they want. But in reality, those plateforms put in lights what they want you to listen. Thanks to algorithms, Spotify propose you to listen what you like but mostly what is lucrative for them. Consequently, you listen a lot of manistream songs by yourself.
In another way, let’s talk about the article himself. I dont agree with those types of classement which tell to people what it’s cool to listen. But like i said, this classification make people believe that this Hierarchy has been established in a « democratic way » by the customers, but it’s not . For all these reasons i think that doing a Top’s song of the year, is a little bit useless. Finally, listen what you want, and dont pay attention to this kind of article.
